西门子工业业务领域的楼宇科技业务部(BT)开发了一款用于室内灭火的Sinorix H2O Gas灭火系统。这款系统将氮气与水结合,不单能够有效的灭火,还能阻止火势复燃。这项产品足以说服“2008埃森安全产品贸易展”的专家评委团,将“防火类”安全创新奖颁给西门子公司。

防止火势蔓延

氧气、燃料、热度三者具备的情况下,火就能够燃着并蔓延。如果三者之一的任何一种被去除,火就无法燃着或蔓延,并且一定时间后就会熄灭。所有的灭火系统都基于此原理-自动灭火系统也不例外。鉴于各自应用目的的不同、主要防护对象的不同,使用的灭火剂也不同:这包括水(喷水灭火系统)、气体灭火系统(化学气体或天然气)、水汽结合(如水雾)。水的主要作用是冷却燃烧物体及火焰周边区域,减少火的扩散速度。天然气灭火剂的主要作用是在受保护区对氧气进行局部替换,而化学气体的主要作用是将热与火剥离。这正是新款Sinorix H2O Gas灭火系统的工作原理。这款灭火系统将氮气灭火剂与冷却用的水雾相结合。灭火系统被启动后,两种灭火剂都会通过同样的管道网络及喷头,被送往受灾区域。水雾灭火的其它好处包括:在灭火过程中对受灾物体及受灾区域的影响较小。精细水雾技术只在接触表面形成一层薄薄的水膜薄到只要几分钟就会蒸发干净。这样一来,这种技术一般不会造成损坏,甚至对电子设备也不会损坏。水雾也会从空气中清除火灾导致的有毒气体,这样就减轻了火灾后的通风工作。该灭火系统已经用于丹麦首都的皇家图书馆。

Award winning extinguishing solution: Nitrogen combined with water guarantees high degree of efficiency

Siemens has developed Sinorix H2O Gas, a highly efficient extinguishing solution for room protection, in which the combined use of nitrogen and water provides decisive advantages. While nitrogen displaces the oxygen, water mist lowers the ambient temperature – thus resulting in reliable extinguishing and effective prevention of reignition. The system is thereby tailored to bring the exact amount of water for the specific risk of fire. Siemens Division Building Technologies offers a comprehensive solution from a single source. At the international Security trade fair Essen a panel of security and fire safety experts has recently rewarded Sinorix H2O Gas with the Security Innovation Award 2008.

Every fire needs three elements: oxygen, heat, and fuel. If only one of these elements is removed, the fire cannot spread and will inevitably go out. Automated extinguishing systems are designed on the basis of this principle. Depending on the protection objective and the application in question, different agents can be used for extinguishing fires, for example water (i.e. sprinkler systems), gaseous agents (chemical gas or inert gas) or a combination of water and gas (i.e. water mist). Water cools primarily the materials and the ambient air, preventing the fire from spreading rapidly. The inert gaseous agents work principally by displacing the oxygen, inerting the protected area, while chemical gaseous agents absorb the fire heat leaving the fire without energy.

In the newly developed Sinorix H2O Gas extinguishing solution, the natural extinguishing agents nitrogen and water are combined for a dual effect that quickly and reliably extinguishes the fire. While the nitrogen reduces the concentration of oxygen in the protected zone, putting the fire immediately out, the water mist lowers the ambient temperature to a level below the flashpoint of the combustible material. When discharged, both extinguishing agents are carried by the same piping network and are distributed by the same nozzles to the extinguishing area. The nitrogen also serves as a propellant for the water, assuring moderate and equal distribution. Already by using small quantities of water, the water mist mixture cools down overheated equipment and surfaces, thereby providing an additional protective effect. The water mist also reduces the risk of reignition. Thanks to the use of fine spraying technology, exposed surfaces are coated with only a very thin layer of water – so thin that it usually poses no risk even to electronic equipment, because it evaporates within a few minutes. Furthermore, the water mist removes toxic fumes from the air and the room can be quickly ventilated using a ventilation system or windows. The natural extinguishing agents nitrogen and water are chemically neutral and are safe for the environment and people (The earth’s atmosphere is composed of about 78% nitrogen and about 21% oxygen. If the oxygen percentage can be reduced to less than 13% by volume, any fire will be extinguished without posing a threat to persons in the area.).

Sinorix H2O Gas is suitable for extinguishing smoldering and deep-seated fires that can arise in closed facilities, such as archives, libraries, museums, warehouses or rooms for technical equipment. After thorough testing, this Siemens solution was successfully installed at the Royal Library in Copenhagen, Denmark. The irreplaceable collections of this library, which was founded by King Frederic II around the year 1648, require a reliable protection system. “Books do not behave like the standard fires you normally deal with in other technical solutions. Together with Siemens, we have tested this new system with special focus on our principal material: books,” explained Claus Friis, Head of Security of the Royal Library. The tests confirmed that Sinorix H2O Gas is the ideal solution.

To make the system as efficient as possible, the mixture of nitrogen and water must be tailored exactly to the specific requirements and fire risks. For this, Siemens developed a computer program that precisely calculates the dimensions of the piping network, nozzles, extinguishing range, venting, retention time, etc. for a wide range of application areas. The Sinorix H2O Gas extinguishing system as well as the calculation program have been tested and approved by VdS (Verband der Sachversicherer, European certification authority). Siemens is currently the only supplier to offer a VdS-approved gas-water combined extinguishing system for room protection. The solution offers a package of services, including risk assessment, system design, installation, commissioning, and maintenance – all from one source.

At the recent Security fair in Essen, Sinorix H2O Gas was rewarded with the Security Innovation Award 2008 in the category “Fire Protection”. The organizing Messe Essen GmbH introduced the awards this year for the first time in their history. Over 70 candidatures in four different categories were evaluated by a panel of security and fire safety experts regarding innovation, efficiency and reliability. The awards were presented at the opening ceremony on October 6, 2008.Besides state-of-the-art fire detection systems and a comprehensive service portfolio, the Siemens Building Technologies (BT) Division offers a broad range of advanced extinguishing solutions based on natural and chemical extinguishing agents as well as water-combined solutions for room and object protection. The wide range of offered solutions and the considerable application know-how ensure that a solution can be flexibly tailored to the specific application, to the risks of fire, and to the local requirements and regulations.
